Mural – Perpignan Prison (Centre Pénitentiaire de Perpignan)
Urban Art Up was approached by the Service Pénitentiaire d’Insertion et de Probation (SPIP) to design and supervise an artistic project within the Centre Pénitentiaire de Perpignan, in collaboration with the establishment’s sports teams. The intervention took place in the weight-training room, a central space for practice and cohesion. Its aim was to create a professional mural on the theme of sport and the values it embodies: effort, self-improvement, respect, inclusion and determination.
Under the direction of the artist Hélène Gib’ and the graffiti artist Nino, participants worked on several portraits inspired by emblematic sporting figures. The choice of models represents different disciplines and different profiles:
• a martial arts champion, a worldwide icon of performance,
• a legendary boxer, a symbol of commitment and courage,
• a Paralympic athlete, a figure of resilience,
• an international women’s footballer, embodying parity and women’s sport.
These representations highlight the notions of diversity, equality, role-modelling and accessibility of sport. They also recall the driving role of athletes in building a positive collective imagination. The inmates took part in every stage of the project: developing the mock-ups, preparing the walls, then painting the final works. Urban Art Up provided artistic supervision, logistical coordination and production oversight, guaranteeing a professional and lasting result. Today, the mural is seen daily by the inmates and the supervising teams. It turns this place of sporting practice into an inspiring, motivating space that carries a visual identity. At the end of the intervention, a summary magazine was published, bringing together the stages, photographs of the project and the final works.
